Hello everyone,
It seems to me that, with all the big industry lay-offs, that a lot of folks are looking to reinvent themselves. I think that is great news. I am hoping that people want to become hairstylists, makeup artists, manicurists and estheticians. The “makeover” shows have done a lot to promote our industry, a very good thing indeed, considering that we sometimes feel demoralized (more on that later on).
Reinventing ones’ self is not easy, a total change is too extreme. If you are anything like me, then you must hate change. The trick is to take your time, look at where you are and where you want to be. DARE TO DREAM. What is so bad about becoming a hairstylist? I went to the US BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS site and here is what I found:
1. Hair industry expected to grow 14% from 2006-2016 (per yr)
2. Make-up artists 40% increase
3. Skin care 34% increase
4. Manicurist 28% increase
The growing demand has to do with our aging population along with just an INCREASE in population overall. Lets not forget the fact that $60 is not too much to spend in order to lift our spirits, and make us feel and look better. The Hair Coloring Industry alone is about $10.4 BILLION A YEAR. WOW!
Now back to what I wrote earlier in the article about hairdressers and some times feeling demoralized. I agree that we in the industry are not ROCKET SCIENTISTS…but here is what I know, and what a colleague of mine (Bennie Pollard), has recently said:
THERE WOULD BE NO WEDDINGS……………..WITHOUT US
THERE WOULD BE NO OSCARS………………….WITHOUT US
THERE WOULD BE NO GRAMMYS……………….WITHOUT US
THERE WOULD BE NO PROMS……………………WITHOUT US
THERE WOULD BE NO GLAMOUR……………….WITHOUT US
AND EVEN
THERE WOULD BE NO FUNERALS………………WITHOUT US
Think about all of that and then go back to your family pictures, take a look at who is there for all your milestones? That’s right its your hairdresser! SO BECOME ONE OF US……..Let me know if you need my help.
